Internationally Acclaimed Pianist - Jazz Man

Avzal Ismail (born 12 October 1961) is a prolific ex South African pianist with decades of experience behind him. His musical influences are many, but he particularly enjoys playing jazz and latin music. Avzal has been prominent on both the South African and international music scenes and has lived and performed accross the globe, from Vancouver to Lisbon to Dubai to Beijing. Among the musicians that he has worked with are : Regina Carter, Donald Harrison, the late Carl Anderson, Bakhithi Khumalo, Vusi Khumalo, Efrain Toro, the late Johnny Fourie, Malaysian drummer Lewis Pragasam, and many others. In addition, he has supported such notables as Irakere, John McLaughlin and the Free Spirits, Shakatak and others as an opening act.


He has numerous recording and television appearances to his credit and co-wrote the Finale for the World Summit on Sustainable Development when it was held in South Africa. He has appeared at such notable events such as the Common Wealth Games, the South African Presidential inauguration banquet, the Summer Jazz days festival in Poland, the Afro Arab trade fair and thousands of corporate events, launches and black tie functions. He has toured internationally in an individual capacity as well as with his South African supergroup Light Years.

Avzal has also been resident pianist at some of the world's top hotels including the Ritz Carlton in Bahrain, the Dusit Thani and Royal Meridien in Dubai , Terminal City, The Farimont Pacific, The Rosewood and The Shangri La in Vancouver, The Four Seasons in Malaysia and Sun City in South Africa.

Avzal splits his time between living in Canada, London and South Africa where he performs regularly with top names. He represented Bosendorfer pianos at the showcase of their new limited edition piano showcasing the Hummingbird, one of only 9 handbuilt pianos in the series. He has also recorded with Vancouver based Brazilian band Nova Sol and has appeard in festivals such as the Summer Jazz Days Festival in Poland and the Latin summer festival in Vancouver.

He is Currently in discussions to direct a joint collaboration band featuring musicians from SouthAfrica and the United Kingdom.
